Died c. 693. An Irishman by birth, he left his country for Alsace and
settled in the wilds of Haselac, where he built a monastery. About 678,
he was raised to the see of Strassburg, where he founded another
monastery -- St. Thomas's -- chiefly for his own countrymen
(
Benedictines).
Florentius is depicted as a bishop with a bear guarding his sheep.
Sometimes wild beasts surround him; at other times there is a ray of
light upon him. He is invoked against gallstones and rupture
(
Roeder).
