Born in Ireland, c. 590; died c. 665. Son of King Fiachna of West Munster, Ireland, Cumian became a monk and was placed in charge of the abbey school at Clonfert. Later he was the abbot-founder of Kilcummin Monastery. He was noted for his learning and promoted the Roman liturgical practices against the abbot of Iona, who was a stalwart defender of the Celtic practices. Cumian's defence is still available, the "Paschal Epistle," and he also wrote a hymn, some of which is still extant. The surname Fada or Fota means "the tall" (Benedictines, Delaney, Encyclopaedia).
