Born in Ireland, c. 590; died c. 665. Son of King Fiachna of West
Munster, Ireland, Cumian became a monk and was placed in charge of the
abbey school at Clonfert. Later he was the abbot-founder of Kilcummin
Monastery. He was noted for his learning and promoted the Roman
liturgical practices against the abbot of Iona, who was a stalwart
defender of the Celtic practices. Cumian's defence is still available,
the "Paschal Epistle," and he also wrote a hymn, some of which is still
extant. The surname Fada or Fota means "the tall"
